cycling

Reading curbing traffic by Melissa and Chris Bruntlett highlights many of the benefits of cycling. I believe in increasing cycling as it brings a better quality of life to those involved. It has many advantages and should be encouraged where possible. I have also read movement by Thalia Verkade and Marco The Brommelstroet which highlights the fact that encouraging and making roads better for cycling and walking can reduce people being killed on the roads. It is one of the few areas where the public accept deaths and this should be looked at different. It is good to design things with more than just journey time saving involved.
There is lots being done by people promoting cycling but there is lots more that can be done. Can the mistakes that have been made in the west be eliminated in the developing world. Basically society has been designed around the car since after World War 2 and this has led to urban sprawl and people living further from where they work. Designing streets that are better for bikes can lead to health benefits too. Also designing cities where everything you need is within 15 minutes also helps improve quality of life this is described by Carlos Moreno in the 15 minute city. The Dutch have good provision of cycling and it brings freedom for children and a more sociable society.
